Underfloor Heating Systems, or UFH for short, are rising in popularity due to the energy efficiency and cost savings that they can bring following the initial installation. Underfloor heating systems are definitely an investment as initial costs may exceed those of traditional heating systems. However, you will quickly see cost savings in your monthly bills and can even improve the carbon footprint of your home through integrating a solar powered system to support your underfloor heating.

Energy Efficiency

There are a number of benefits in terms of energy efficiency when it comes to underfloor heating. Overall, underfloor heating that has been maintained effectively, requires less energy to turn. The average underfloor heating system has been recognised as using between 15% and 40% less energy, compared to traditional heating options, such as radiators.

Underfloor heating covers a much larger area than traditional radiators. With this in mind, a radiator will have to produce more heat before it can heat the same area as an underfloor heating covering the whole space.

There is less heat waste when it comes to underfloor heating systems. Providing that the system has been maintained and repairs are carried out when something goes wrong, no heat is lost. With radiators, much of the heat will be lost to the space above, with heat rising up and away from the area you wish to heat.

Environmental Benefits

Your underfloor heating system can also be made environmentally friendly through using renewable energy. This could be running the system on solar panels, heat pumps or other self-sustaining methods. This way of running your underfloor heating can result in a more energy efficient home or business space, and reduce your overall carbon footprint.

Cost of Underfloor Heating

The initial installation and setup costs for underfloor heating are higher. However, this is recognised as repaying itself in energy savings and therefore cost savings, in the long term. Pairing your underfloor heating with renewable energy sources means you can make heating your home or office for less.

Improved Aesthetics

Unless you’re willing to fork out for the more trendy radiators on the market, your standard radiator may not compliment your home, take up valuable wall space and ruin the aesthetics. Underfloor heating can be fitted beneath your floor leaving less disruption to the style. In addition, the heat from underfloor heating will be dispersed across the whole room, making the space feel more comfortable and luxurious.

Cleanliness

One of the key gripes that radiators bring to the forefront is the collection of dust. Traditional radiators can be more difficult to clean, with dust becoming trapped inside. This can mean more dust is gathering around your office or home which can look messy and cause irritation.

Why is underfloor heating more efficient than radiators?

UFH is more energy efficient because it is able to heat a room more evenly. Underfloor heating also does not need to be heated to such a high temperature. Radiators need to be heated up to around 60-80 degrees, whereas underfloor heating needs to be heated to around 29 degrees or less to feel the full effects.

Cold spots caused by the location of the radiator can also be managed more effectively with underfloor heating. Equally, there is no overheating with underfloor heating systems, which can be a problem that occurs when situated close to a radiator. The radiant heat method provided from underfloor heating can provide savings on heating bills and provide a more ambient temperature.
